Il film alterna sequenze di taglio documentaristico a episodi basati prevalentemente sull'azione drammatica. Il film è stato oggetto di diverse sonorizzazioni, in particolare dei musicisti Mauro Lanza e Ghédalia Tazartès. Music by: Matti Bye (restored version: 2006), Launy Grøndahl, Daniel Humair (1968), Barði Jóhannsson (as Bardi Johannsson) (new score 2006), Emil Reesen (1941), Ludwig van Beethoven (as Ludwig von Beethoven) (original score 1922), Art Zoyd (1997). Other versions: Witchcraft Through the Ages (1968), the 76-minute version of Häxan, narrated by William S. Burroughs, with a soundtrack featuring Jean-Luc Ponty. Re-released in 1941 in Denmark, with a filmed introduction by director Benjamin Christiensen, in which he explains the film. Though the reissued version does use some intertitles for the dramatic scenes, they use wording that is often very different from the intertitles of the original 1922 version. Reissued in 1968 with a jazz score featuring Jean-Luc Ponty and narration by author William S. Burroughs.Trama
